Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

  • What is Scout?

Scout is GameTree’s Discord LFG bot. It helps you instantly form groups when you start playing a game by inviting the right people and creating a private voice and chat channel automatically.

Instead of asking “anyone on?”, Scout builds the squad for you. To minimize noise, Scout makes sure to target just the right players, and also cleans up oustanding invites and channels after the session.

  • How is Scout different from normal Discord LFG?

Normal LFG relies on manual messages, noisy user/role tagging, and hoping someone sees it.

    Scout:

    • detects when you start playing
    • invites friends and compatible players automatically
    • creates a temporary group chat and voice channel for your session

    Less organizing. More playing.

  • What is the GameTree app / Do I need it to use Scout?

No. You can use Scout entirely from Discord, and as a Guest.

Connecting an account from the mobile app here is optional.

    Connecting allows you to:

    • Take a personality test to imrpove the compatibility of your matches
    • Use a matchmaking tool to discover compatible friends/players and build your LFG Friends roster
    • Manage your Friends and Games lists easier
    • Build a beautiful gamer profile, that will also be shared when you /lfg and improve recipient response rates
  • How do I join a server with Scout?

You must be in at least one Discord server where Scout is installed.

If you’re unsure, join the GameTree Discord:
    https://discord.gg/6duvwHx2Q2

Once you share a server with Scout, it can message and invite you.

In the future we plan to have a directory of Scout-enabled LFG communities you may join.

  • What is the Magic Button?

The “Magic Button” is what users call the one-click LFG flow.

When you start a multiplayer game, Scout detects it and prompts you to “Create LFG”. With one click, Scout:

    • invites players
    • creates channels
    • organizes the session

    No commands required.

How Scout Works

  • What Scout Does

Scout is GameTree’s next-generation Discord LFG (Looking For Group) bot designed to automate group formation so you can play instead of organize. It intelligently matches players, invites them, and sets up private voice and text channels all for you.

  • Scout’s Core LFG Flows

Scout works in three main modes:

    1) Server Communities

    • Scout posts LFG announcements in a Discord channel.
    • It DMs relevant players based on who’s online and playing the same game.
    • It then creates private voice + text channels for your session.

    2) Friends & Private Groups

    • Scout invites your LFG Friends who are online and playing.
    • It coordinates the group without manual tagging or messaging.
    • It builds a private voice + text channel for your group.

    3) Public Matchmaking

    • If you want extra players, Scout fills the group with compatible players you’re predicted to vibe with.
    • Matching uses your preferences, connected games, and personality when available.

    Scout’s Process

    1. LFG is created — either live or scheduled.
    2. Scout contacts players — relevant friends and compatible players get a DM invite.
    3. Players join — participants accept and join the group.
    4. Play happens — your session runs with a private voice and text channel.
    5. Cleanup & summary — Scout deletes temporary channels/posts and sends a session summary.
  • Can I schedule an LFG for later?

    Yes.

When creating an LFG with /lfg, you can set a future start time. Scout will automatically notify and invite relevant players when the time comes, just like a live LFG.

Scheduling is useful when you know you’ll be playing later and want others to plan around it. It’s the ideal way to LFG (when you can plan for it) because it gives people plenty of time to RSVP to your session.

  • Linking Your GameTree Account Matters

Scout works better (especially for compatible matchmaking) when you link your GameTree account. This adds:

    • your games list
    • your preferences and playstyle
    • friend connections from the app
    • a beautiful profile people can check to decide if they want to play with you

Without linking, Scout still works, but invitations may be more basic (relying on server membership and simple availability).

  • Does Scout use my Discord friends list?

No, though that would be convenient. Discord does not allow bots or apps from smaller publishers like GameTree to access your Discord friends list.

Scout has a more specific system of who you want to LFG with known as LFG friends.

    • People you add in the GameTree app or via Sync with Steam there
    • People you’ve played with in sessions
    • Members of the servers you share with Scout
    • People you are predicted to like for public LFG’s
    • People who add each other with “/friends <add> <username>”

This makes Scout’s friend system more accurate for gaming than Discord’s general friends list.

Troubleshooting

  • My LFG’s aren’t filling

To maximize your LFG’s being filled:

    • Enable more curated matching by making a GameTree account by downloading the app, and take the personality test, and mak sure all the games you are open to playing are in your LFG Games
    • Schedule in advance so players have plenty of time to discover your LFG
    • Add LFG Friends with “/friends <add> <username>”, by synching Steam on the app, or by adding friends with GameTree app’s Matching feature
    • Expand your Availability, and make sure you are not in Snooze mode in “/preferences”
    • LFG in an active server with the bot, or else from the GameTree server (autoamtically done with directly LFG’ing in a DM with Scout)
    • Check Troubleshooting for other errors
    • Play popular games. Because Scout is still in Beta, you’ll have better luck with more popular games
  • Scout isn’t sending me messages

Scout sends LFG invites, session summaries, and helpful prompts through Discord DMs.

If you’re not receiving them, Discord is blocking the bot.

    Fix this first:

    1. Open the Discord server where Scout is installed
    2. Click the server name → Privacy Settings
    3. Turn ON Allow direct messages from server members

This setting is required for Scout to message you.

Also make sure you didn’t block Scout yourself.

  • Scout doesn’t detect when I start playing a game

Scout uses your Discord activity status to know when you launch a game.

If this is off, Scout cannot trigger LFG prompts.

    Fix:

    1. Discord → User Settings (gear bottom left)
    2. Activity Privacy
    3. Turn ON Display current activity as a status message
  • I don’t share a server with Scout

Scout can only message users who are in a Discord server where Scout is installed.

If you left the server or never joined one, Scout has no way to reach you.

Join the GameTree Discord to test:
    https://discord.gg/6duvwHx2Q2

  • I / my friends aren’t getting LFG invites

Scout bot priotizes invites with friends.

To send and receive LFG invites with friends, amke sure you:

    1. Are both in any server with the Scout bot (here is the GameTree one https://discord.gg/6duvwHx2Q2

    2. Have Scout bot unblocked and enable DM’s from members of the server it is in. Discord → Friends → Blocked

    3. Have your friend added, either on the GameTree app, or with the bot command “/friends <add> <Discord or GameTree username>”. If from the app, a friend requst must also be approved by the other party.

    4. If you LFG in a private server that isn’t GameTree’s, only friends who are members of that server will be invited. To public LFG, LFG directly with the bot or in the GameTree server.

  • I’m not getting mobile notifications

Scout may be messaging you about LFG’s, but Discord notifications are disabled on your phone.

    Check:

    • Phone Settings → Discord → Notifications ON
    • Discord → Notifications → Direct Messages ON
  • I have a problem with the GameTree app
