Escape From Tarkov Ice Breaker: Tactical Briefing & Threat Assessment
To: All PMC Operators in the Tarkov Sector
Subject: Patch 1.0.5.0 — The “Boreas” Vessel / Icebreaker Area of Operations (AO)
With the deployment of Patch 1.0.5.0, this official Escape From Tarkov: Operation Icebreaker guide details a new, highly restricted operational zone confirmed in the Gulf of Finland. Trapped within the Tarkov blockade ring, the new AO is a nuclear-powered logistics vessel designated the “Boreas,” owned by Paradigm Shipping.
This is not a standard resource-gathering run. The Escape From Tarkov Icebreaker environment is an instanced, extreme-threat zone restricted entirely to PvE (1-3 PMC operators). Do not mistake the absence of rival Rogues and Black Division for a low-threat deployment; the sheer density of tier-one hostile threats, compounded by environmental hazards, makes this one of the most punishing Close Quarters Battle (CQB) environments in the game.
Here is your comprehensive briefing on the AO, the new High-Value Target (HVT), and the logistics required to survive.
The Area of Operations
The Boreas is a floating fatal funnel. The layout consists of tight corridors, multi-level stairwells, and claustrophobic service tunnels that heavily restrict maneuverability. Tactical pacing and systematic room clearing are mandatory.
- Zero-Insurance Policy: Similar to the TerraGroup Labs, recovery teams cannot access the Boreas. If you go down, your kit is permanently lost.
Hostile Forces & New HVT: “The Wedge”
The vessel is heavily occupied by Rogue factions, but the primary threats are elite Black Division operatives and a new local commander.

HVT: The Wedge
Intelligence confirms the presence of a new Black Division boss operating under the callsign “The Wedge.” He is custom-built for the ship’s claustrophobic layout and operates as a hyper-aggressive close-range pusher.
- Loadout: Armed with an HK MP7 (SureFire SF3P 4.6×30) and heavily armored in a Spiritus Systems LV-119 Plate Carrier and Team Wendy EXFIL helmet.
- Behavioral Profile: The Wedge will not hold static defensive lines. Expect rapid, aggressive pushes, powerslides into engagements, and immediate head-level target acquisition. Standard peeker’s advantage applies heavily against him; do not hold static angles when he is pushing your sector. This can be countered currently with smoke grenades.
Secondary HVTs: The Goons & Black Division
As if The Wedge wasn’t enough, the Rogue trio known as “The Goons” Knight is also confirmed to be patrolling the vessel, frequently holding the lower levels and entry points. Black Division guards maintain overwatch in the engine room and helipad sectors. They utilize coordinated team tactics, deployment, and suppressive fire, top end ammo (SSAP, M855A1). Battlestate Games has recently changed their behavior and play more passively in the engine room.

Logistics: Infiltration and Exfiltration
Accessing the Escape From Tarkov: Ice Breaker zone requires significant upfront capital and strict adherence to Rules of Engagement (ROE).
Infiltration Phase
You cannot select Icebreaker directly from your standard deployment screen until you complete the prerequisite “Boreas” taskline (initiated via your Hideout’s Intel Level 3 Radio or by securing a TerraGroup poster in Ground Zero/Streets).
- Insertion Point: Shoreline Pier Transit.
- Transit Cost: 400,000 Roubles per deployment.
Exfiltration Phase
Extraction from the Boreas requires precise timing and specific equipment. There is currently only one confirmed vector out, located at the Helipad on the south side of the vessel’s upper decks.
Required Exfil Equipment:
- 1x Handheld RSP-30 Green Flare: Must be fired vertically into the sky from the designated signal area.
- 2,500 Euros: Cash payment required to secure transport.
Failure to secure both of these items in your secure container prior to deployment means you are walking into a one-way mission. The helicopter will only arrive once per raid; if you miss the window or are KIA on the pad, there is no secondary exfil.
Tactical Recommendations
- Pre-Medicate Heavily: Golden Star Balm or Ibuprofen should be hot-keyed or kept in your secure container.
- Armor Piercing is Mandatory: With Black Division guards and The Wedge running high-tier plates, standard ammunition will not penetrate fast enough in CQB. Run top-tier AP rounds to drop targets before they can close the distance.
- Bring Impact Grenades: Breaching the Engine Room and clearing out clustered Black Division operatives is highly lethal. Impact grenades are the most reliable tool for breaking their defensive lines without exposing yourself to their fatal funnels.
Surviving Escape From Tarkov Icebreaker update requires flawless execution and squad synergy. Check your corners. Stay alive.
