Will Subnautica 2 Be Multiplayer?

The developers have confirmed that Subnautica 2 will have a multiplayer mode, which will be implemented as a co-op for up to 4 people. This is a very important change since the previous games, Subnautica and Subnautica Below Zero, did not have an official co-op.

The world of Subnautica is very addictive and enjoyable to explore, and even from the early access of the first part, the community had a request for co-op, which, unfortunately, the developers did not implement. There were fan multiplayer mods for Subnautica and Subnautica Below Zero, but they added a lot of bugs and generally did not give the best experience in the game. Now, all this is in the past since there will be an official Subnautica 2 co-op, which can be evidenced not only by the teaser of the game but also by confirmation from the developers themselves.

Will Subnautica 2 Multiplayer Be Cross-Platform?

According to the developers, Subnautica 2 is planned to have full crossplay support on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. This means that players will be able to play together in one game session regardless of the platform, but we don’t know whether there will be cross-progression between different platforms. 

The game has been announced for PC and current-gen consoles, but it is not mentioned whether it will be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Likewise, we do not know whether the game will be ported to Nintendo consoles. Previous games were released on Nintendo Switch, but it is not yet clear whether Subnautica 2 will appear on Nintendo Switch or the new, recently announced Nintendo Switch 2.

• Subnautica 2 will support crossplay on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Game And Multiplayer Release Date

The game is scheduled to be released in early access in 2025, with multiplayer mode coming at the same time. I think the Subnautica 2 release date is set for autumn 2025, but I can’t say for sure, of course. The developers plan for the game to be in early access for 2-3 years and gradually grow with new content and biomes. The full game will be released in 2027 approximately. The developers also said that they do not plan to add a season pass or subscription fees to the game. For Xbox subscription owners, the availability of the game on Game Pass from day one will be a nice bonus.
