Fallout 4 Multiplayer & Co Op Mode – How To Play

How To Play Fallout 4 Multiplayer Mod With Friends

Fallout 4 is an exciting open-world action RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios, set in a post-apocalyptic Boston. You explore the wasteland, complete quests, and build settlements while finding out the secrets kept from the people. Like many fans, I love the game but hate that Fallout 4 doesn’t have multiplayer. I’ve always wished for a multiplayer mode to survive the wastelands with friends!

At one point, a mod made this possible. The Fallout 4 Multiplayer Mod (F4MP) allowed online co-op gameplay, but unfortunately, it is no longer functional. Let’s dive into what the mod was, how it worked, and whether there’s any hope for its return.

💡 Highlights:

  • Fallout 4 is a single-player game with no official multiplayer mode.
  • The Fallout 4 Multiplayer Mod (F4MP) allowed online co-op but is no longer functional.
  • It was PC-only (Windows) and never available for consoles.
  • No local co-op or split-screen options exist for Fallout 4.
  • Fans hope for an F4MP revival, but there’s no confirmation from mod developers.

Does Fallout 4 Have An Official Multiplayer?

No, the original Fallout 4 is designed exclusively for single-player play. However, with all very popular games, the same thing always happens – many amateur modifications are released for them. One such was Fallout 4 Multiplayer Mod (F4MP) by Nexus, which allowed you to play with friends online.

Is The Multiplayer Mod Still Working?

Unfortunately, the multiplayer mod for Fallout 4 is not working currently. It faced a number of technical issues and was paused. You can’t use the mod with the latest versions of the game right now, but all the fans hope that the mod developers will get back to it and make it active again.

Between Which Platforms Is It Available?

When the Fallout 4 Multiplayer Mod (F4MP) was functional, it was only available for PC. It worked specifically with the Windows version of Fallout 4 and was not compatible with consoles.

How To Play With Multiplayer Mod In Fallout 4

When the mod was still active, there was a host-client system, meaning that one player hosted the game and initiated the session, and other players could join. To do this, they were supposed to manually enter the host’s IP address.

Players could see each other moving, roam the wasteland together, build settlements, or even engage in combat, but the animations, quests, and NPC interactions were a bit desynced or buggy.

Note:

Still, it was a nice experience, and I hope that this multiplayer mod will be revived one day! In the meantime, there’s another game in the game universe, Fallout 76. Though it’s a bit different, it has an official multiplayer!

How To Install Multiplayer Mod For Fallout 4

To play Fallout 4 multiplayer, you were supposed to install a Nexus mod manager and log in with your credentials. Also, you needed to download the F4MP mod and save the files in a dedicated folder. So, the only thing remaining was going to the mod manager and loading Fallout 4. It was quite easy for both novices and experienced players.

Fallout 4 Local Co-op And Split Screen

Fallout 4 local co-op is not possible, as the game is solely for single play. There were attempts to create a split-screen mod but they failed. So, unfortunately, there’s no option to play Fallout 4 on a split screen.

Multiplayer Features

As I mentioned above, the Fallout 4 multiplayer mod is now inactive, so all the multiplayer features ceased to exist. Still, we have hope that the mod will be back with even better features!

When the F4MP mod was active, the following features were available:

  • Player Synchronization. Players could see each other moving around the world in real time.
  • Basic Combat. Players could engage in combat with enemies and each other, though hit detection and damage synchronization were inconsistent.
  • Exploration Together. Players could explore the open world together with their friends.
  • Settlement Building. Some aspects of settlement building were functional in multiplayer, allowing players to build in the same area.
  • Basic Chat Functionality. Some mod versions included an in-game chat system for communication.
  • Weapon & Armor Visibility. Players could see each other’s equipped weapons and armor.
  • Item Dropping & Pickup. Items dropped on the ground could sometimes be seen and picked up by other players.
